African Insignia Hotels grows portfolio with Simunye Zulu Lodge

African Insignia Hotels have pleasure in welcoming Simunye Zulu Lodge near Melmoth KZN to their portfolio. Simunye Zulu Lodge along with the other hotels on the portfolio will enjoy the focus and individual attention by the respected team of well-known industry professionals (Directors) Lerina McCall and Jessica Nhleko.

Lerina McCall spokesperson for African Insignia Hotels explains that for her Simunye has very special memories as she was one of the first people along with her team at the time, who Barry Leitch the then owner, took via Ox wagon, Horseback and Donkey Cart on a trek from the trading store down the valley across the river and then down the side of the mountain which was lit by paper bags filled with sand and candles – we also experienced a Zulu woman who had been chased away by her family and being a group of woman we just wanted to take her into our group and did not want to listen to Barry regarding the dangers of getting involved in Domestic problems in Zululand. Around the next corner, out of the grass stood up a Zulu Impi – one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. The accommodation those days was only the rock face lodges which had no electricity or running water and the maidens brought hot water for the bath in big plastic barrels. There was an old fashioned jug and bowel in the room to do your ablutions with.

Over the years many improvements have been made, the main improvements being there is now electricity and running water.

The Property is now under new management and the new owners have further enhanced the property by building a road down to the lodge – albeit gravel an excellent road – my Audi A3 (very low and not happy with gravel roads) had no problem negotiating its way up or down with 4 adults and luggage. The new General Manager has been employed and she starts work next week – we will introduce her shortly.

The new owners have suspended the ox wagon and tractor trailer until all safety standards are met and closed the Trading store arrival and departure point for renovations and improvements. These services will be back in 2014.

Accommodation consists of 7 Rock Face rooms built into the cliff face, 3 Africa Rooms, 10 Lodge Rooms and 5 Rondavels with a new conference centre, Spa and additional accommodation to be completed by mid 2014.

Tented Camp Site; on the riverbank and edge of the cliff fully serviced with ablution, hot shower and lights.

Simunye Zulu Lodge offers a gentle mix of traditional Zulu Homestead and experiences, and world class hospitality and leisure activities.

The Lodge is ideal for the international traveller, or a local getaway to truly rest and rejuvenate. They welcome couples, parties or groups, and most especially families as there is so much to do at Simunye.

If you’re celebrating a birthday, engagement, wedding, anniversary or any other special function, they will cater to your needs in their unique Simunye style.
