Tips on saving money on airfare

Whether you are planning a vacation, travelling for work or looking to relocate the quickest way to get there is by flying but may not always be the cheapest method. If you are on a budget and needing to save money on airfare there are a few things that you can do to cut costs and get to your destination all within a budget that you can afford.

Advance Booking

The first thing that will always save you money is advanced booking. There are tons of airlines that offer discounts by simply booking your airline tickets at least 6 weeks to 3 months in advance. Before actually booking a ticket you should always compare prices from various airlines to determine which one is right for you.

Round Trip Airfare

Many people need airfare one way which is actually more costly than round trip at times. If this is the case book a round trip ticket and just don’t use the return flight if you don’t need it. If you do need the return flight you may want to consider looking into airlines that offer a companion fare for when you are traveling for more than one person.

Seating Class

First class or business class can be rather expensive so unless you absolutely must have the extra leg space or be the first one to receive drinks opt for an economy because you will be able to save hundreds if not  thousands of dollars depending on where you are travelling to.

Airport Location

Many people fly out of the airport that is closest to their home mainly for convenience but other locations may offer a cheaper rate especially if it’s a bigger city because there are more flights coming in and out of a larger airport.

So check rates for various airports near you and various locations that are relatively close to your destination. Even if it’s a 30 – 45 minute drive it may save you a ton of money which can be better used for other parts of your trip like accommodations and food or entertainment.

Book Via Reliable Airfare Website

While booking directly with the airline may seem like the best idea but booking directly may not always give you the discounts that you are looking for. Because of this you should look at 3rd party sites such as Kayak.com, CheapAirfare.com, Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, Priceline.com, Orbitz.com and other similar sites that are great at getting you discounted prices.

Bundles Are Cheaper

If you need more than just airfare such as hotel accommodations or a car rental you can often get a better rate if you choose to bundle everything together instead of separately. This is because the companies want you to purchase more than just one thing which is why they offer discounts because in the long run they make more money this way.

Be Flexible With Your Travel Dates

Booking your travel dates should be flexible if possible because you can save hundreds to thousands by just moving the travel dates ahead or back a bit. Always looking for as many discounts as possible and once you find a rate that you are happy to make sure to book it as soon as possible because rates do you change daily and on some sites hourly so don’t hesitate to book at the price that you are happy with.
