easyJet set to launch new budget airline in Africa

easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou is behind this new low-cost carrier that  expects to start operations in four months time.

To be known as Fastjet, airline hoping to capitalise on Africa’s rapid economic growth which is the breeding ground for the middle class who travel frequently for business and leisure.

These developments are as a result of Haji-Ioannou’s easyGroup joining forces earlier this month with pan-African giant Lonrho. Lonhro who operates budget airline Fly540 in East Africa, decided on selling their aviation business to investment firm Rubicon Diversified Investments, where easyGroup has a 5% stake.

Initially FastJet will be using Lonrho’s existing routes in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Angola, before exploring other parts of the African continent.
