Protea Hospitality Group to exhibit at AKWAABA Travel Market
The Protea Hospitality Group will be using this month’s AKWAABA Travel Market in Nigeria to showcase its new developments in West Africa, as well as introduce travel buyers to its existing portfolio of 11 hotels.
The AKWAABA Travel Market is the only international travel fair in West Africa and attracts buyers and industry professions from across the continent, as well as the rest of the world.
Protea Hospitality Group’s West Africa Director Pieter Bekker says the expo at the end of the month is an ideal opportunity to network with existing and new clients and help to showcase the potential growth in the travel industry created by rapid economic development in the region.
“Protea Hotel Select Benin City opened earlier this year, and another Protea Hotel is under construction in Ikeja, Lagos. That one will open in 2014, followed by Nigeria’s first and arguably most opulent African Pride Hotel, also in Ikeja.
“We also have the Protea Hotel Select Takoradi in Ghana under construction and we are exploring expansion to other countries in the region.”
Bekker says demand for quality hotels is steadily increasing on the back of economic growth in countries such as Nigeria and Ghana.
“Where there are business travellers there will be hotels, and we intend to expand in tandem with the economic J-curve that is bringing wealth to a region that has historically offered little more than mineral resources. That has changed, and many countries in West Africa present exciting hospitality markets,” Bekker says.
The AKWAABA Travel Market this year will draw attendance from more than 20 countries, including 12 foreign Airlines and leading African hotel chains. It is open to all as it is “where Africa meets the world”.
AKWAABA has been designated by the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) as the official travel exhibition in Nigeria. It is the only international Travel expo in West Africa in partnership with NTDC, listed by UNWTO, a partner event of ATA in the region and the only member of ITTFA in West Africa.
