Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch collects 4,000 blankets for charity

It was a parade of Who’s Who in South Africa at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch over the weekend as citizens of Jozi turned up in their hundreds to support the hotel’s participation in the third annual Twitter Blanket Drive. The hotel had collected an astounding 3 909 blankets by the end of Saturday night – more than twice their target of 1 500.

Among the celebs who gathered for the event on Saturday were Wonderboom frontman Cito, hip-hop DJ Noni “Ms Cosmo” Rwaxa, Highveld Stereo breakfast personality Sam Cowen, actor/singer Emmanuel Castis, hunky actors Sibu Radebe and Stephen van Niekerk, singer Jacques Terre’Blanche, 7nd Laan’s Donnalee Roberts, Metro FM DJ Carol Ralefeta and Crash Car Burn – to name but a few.

The target at the beginning of the blanket drive was 1 500 (500 to Nkosi’s Haven and 1 000 to Kitty and Puppy Haven) but so large was the number of donations, said ecstatic hotel GM Anton Gillis, that they were able to include another orphanage and other service projects in Alexandra.

Complimentary snacks and milkshakes were served to all who donated blankets for this warm hearted cause on Saturday night, whilst various artists and DJs kept everyone entertained from Pixie Bennett, Crash Car Burn to DJ Cosmo from YFM, said Gillis.

“For the past month GUESTS and CLIENTS of the Hotel have been buying and donating blankets, which eventually formed mountains in the hotel’s reception area.

“When the blankets were moved on Saturday to the 1st floor where the event was hosted the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! TEAM counted a total collection of 2 800 blankets. A further 1 109 blankets were donated on the night by all who attended the event; so all in all the total collected blankets was an incredible 3909!”

Gillis thanked everyone who had donated blankets in the past few months, and given of their time to make the event on Saturday such an outstanding success.

Protea Hospitality Group Director of Sales, Marketing and Revenue, Danny Bryer, said this blanket drive was the sort of social responsibility project that all 130 hotels within the group were encouraged to support.

“Every hotel within the Protea Hospitality Group must as policy get involved in at least one community project, but I’m happy to say that most have several social responsibility initiatives that they support.

“Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch is one of those hotels that is extremely proactive and we’ve very proud of the TEAM’s achievement,” Bryer said.
