The province of KwaZulu-Natal is once again geared to host Africa’s greatest horse racing event, the Vodacom Durban July, on 5 July 2014.
The event is expected to attract some 63,000 visitors, contributing over R110-million to the region’s coffers.
In addition, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN) is bringing 35 travel agents and media from Zambia, Botswana, the DRC, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The hosted guests, who arrived in KZN at the end of June, have been to the South Coast, North Coast and Durban on an educational tour, before now attending the big race on Saturday.
Commenting on the importance of such partnerships, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Mike Mabuyakhulu, said, “This initiative is part of the work that we have done with South African Express to ensure that both direct routes to Harare and Lusaka are sustainable, and we continue to grow tourist arrivals from these regions. TKZN will also ensure that there are trade engagements with our local partners, who will each present their tourism offerings to the group”.
This group follows another delegation of media and trade from Mauritius that also visited the province recently. The group were able to experience Zululand, the Elephant Coast and Durban.

Furthermore, the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, in partnership with the Loliwe Tourism Train, will be bringing down over 40 consumers from Botswana, who will take a more scenic two-day route from Johannesburg, with stopovers in Ladysmith, to explore local tourism experiences. Guests will be entertained throughout by some of the KZN celebrity ambassadors, such as comedian David Kau and Generations star Sophie Ndaba.
Head of Durban Tourism, Mr Phillip Sithole, said, “The Vodacom Durban July surpasses any other event on the African continent. For Durban, the event is a great platform to show off the city and its many offerings. It also highlights our growing track record of successfully hosting major international events in the City of Durban.
“We will also use this platform to forge strategic relationships with the vast array of media that are in town for this event, which will further create awareness of Durban as a leading tourist destination in the country,” said Sithole.
Some of the key guests who will attend the Vodacom Durban July are Terry Pheto; celebrity couple, Sonia and Mathew Booth; and Mammpho Brescia, well-known as Iris from the hit soapie Isibaya.
