Unique and meaningful gift ideas from SA Mint

Centurion, South Africa – 15 February 2018: The South African Mint, a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has added another four colour coins to the sterling – silver colour coin series, with bird fauna and flora of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve (CWCBR). The range celebrates the rich diversity and astounding beauty of the Cape West Coast Biosphere, situated in the coastal zone north of Cape Town.

As with the first installment of the colour coin range, the 2017 edition consists of two R10 (1 oz, sterling silver) bird-themed colour coins and two R5 (1 oz, sterling silver) flower-themed coins. In the inaugural edition, two birds and two flowers endemic to the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve were featured, while the second installment features birds and flowers of the CWCBR.

The Cape West Coast is one of the 400 odd UNESCO-registered biosphere reserves established around the world. The reserve is known for its mosaic of diverse ecosystems and habitats which include marine, beach and frontal dune environments, pans and wetlands. South Africa’s nine Biosphere Reserves will be commemorated in the Man and Biosphere coin series as well as the colour coin range.

The common obverse of all the coins in this 2017 series show a map of South Africa with the location of the CWCBR within the Western Cape Province. The reverse of the R10 denominated colour coin features the Blue Crane with its Latin name Grus Paradisea while the other features the Caspian Tern with its Latin name Hydroprogne Caspia.

The reverse of the R5 denominated colour coin features the Starfish Lily with its Latin name Ferraria Crispa while the other features the Yellow Wine Cup with its Latin name Geissorhiza Darlingensis.

“Whether you’re looking for a meaningful gift to celebrate an occasion or a reward to celebrate your children’s achievements, a gift from South African Mint sends a clear message that this is an occasion to remember and a gift whose value appreciates with time,” says Tumi Tsehlo, MD, South African Mint.

“The CWCBR series is a special work of art and the success of the series is testament to the incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. Besides celebrating the moment, it could also inspire a lifelong passion for coins.”
