You cannot put a price tag on that first call home when you’ve just landed in a foreign country, but you can put a time limit on it. For the month of July, passengers arriving on the daily Virgin Atlantic flight from London, Heathrow, to OR Tambo International will be able to phone home for free, while they wait for their luggage to arrive.
In order to take the hassle out of trying to connect and find a SIM card in an unfamiliar airport, Virgin Mobile have teamed up with Virgin Atlantic to provide the 300 daily passengers landing in Johannesburg on the London Virgin Atlantic flight, a free Virgin Mobile SIM, pre-loaded with R20 airtime and 100 MBs data to get talking, texting and sharing in South Africa.
While other operators have stores inside the airport, Virgin Mobile promoters will be handing out information leaflets as passengers disembark from the flight and stationing their promoters and RICA agents inside the baggage claim hall.
“We know how important it is to connect with your loved ones when you land in a new country, and we’re delighted to be able to offer our passengers connecting from London and the US to Johannesburg that all-important first call home, for free,” says Virgin Mobile’s COO, Jason Hair.
“We’re ‘keeping it in the family’ and offering Virgin customers the whole package – we’re connecting our customers literally via Virgin Atlantic flights and figuratively through Virgin Mobile airtime and data services the minute they land.”

Apart from the convenience of being able to connect immediately, the Virgin Mobile airtime and data packages are competitively priced for both the leisure and business traveller. The Virgin Mobile international calling rate* is R0.99 per minute, whereas average international roaming rates are £1.45 (R26.10) per minute. An international SMS on Virgin Mobile will cost R1.50, where international roaming rates will cost you £0.50 (R9.00). Lastly, Virgin Mobile international data rates cost R0.99 per MB, compared to an average international roaming rate of £8 (R144). So it makes sense to connect locally, on local rates, rather than paying higher rates when you’re using international roaming.
Virgin Mobile is all about that “unbeatable customer experience”, which means telling mum you’re safe the minute you land and knowing that all-important Yankees score you’ve been thinking about for the last 11 hours in transit.
“Virgin Atlantic is excited to partner with a sister company, Virgin Mobile, and help our passengers stay connected with friends and family while they are visiting South Africa. As an airline, we are always striving to offer our passengers added benefits to make their travels anything but ordinary,” says Liezl Gericke, Sales and Marketing Manager for Virgin Atlantic South Africa.
