Weekend family outing – Aerial Harties Cableway

I had the pleasure of visiting Hartbeespoort Cableway a few months ago with my family. I have travelled to Sun City numerous times to attend the Million Dollar Golf Challenge courtesy of Sun International. The route to Sun City from Johannesburg passes through Harties, however we had never made a stop within Hartbeespoort to explore the area and its offerings. Those trips were normally in a bus full of journalists from various media houses.

This time around though, it was different in that I wasn’t travelling as part of a media group passing through Harties…but Harties was our final destination with only my family on board.

Driving from Roodepoort, via N14, taking the Lanseria off-ramp…the trip took about an hour to reach Harties Cableway. Am yet to visit Table Mountain, therefore whatever I knew about aerial cableway…had not been through experience, but reading about it.

This time around I experienced the ride first hand and it was such a pleasure, because the cage travels at such a snail phase for you to absorb the environment and appreciate the experience. Even if you’re afraid of heights, that shouldn’t be a problem as the cableway travels gentle not to test your phobia.

Cableway cage can accommodate a maximum of 6 people. We boarded the cableway as one family, without any strangers…which was a pleasure.

Pity we did not book our ride online, we could have bought cheaper tickets at R120 per person, as we paid R140 per person on site. Our 3 year old son didn’t pay a cent…

The views at the top of the mountain were breathtaking, especially having an all round view of Harties dam, observing the boat cruises in action left me envious. Unfortunately we didn’t make it on time for a boat cruise…which is why we intend visiting Hartbeespoort within a few months time for the boat cruise. The neighbourhood around the Harties dam reminded me of the South Coast… and I even spotted a “House of Waffles” road signs, my experience of an exclusively waffles outlet was with The House of Waffles in Ramsgate.
